Modifying a block that is already in a type mode is a problem in xy4. You
need to back-arrow into the selected block for the "surround" effect to take
place. Some XPL code could take care of it if you use the menus or want to
load code onto the mode keys; if I get time, I'll post something.

My enhanced menu/dialog system, BTW, will do the "surround" thing with named
styles (among other things).
