printer drivers

i use hplj-4.prn with xy dos 4.017, and it seems to access most of the
printer's internal fonts quite well. i am puzzled why an xy3+ driver
needs to be used by some?
as to the hpdj500, there is a driver in xy 4.017 for that too. is it
inadequate, does it not access all the built-in fonts? i use it for
an older hpdj and it seems to work reasonably well.
