Re[4]: help

The PS fonts show up in XyWin's font selection list, and have always
worked fine (assuming the underlying Windows version could handle
them).

(Win2000 handles PS fonts (but not OpenType fonts) natively. Win9x
requires Adobe Type Manager.)

Sorry, I was unclear about the other thing. (I was trying to avoid
details since it seemed like my problem wouldn't interest all that
many people on the list -- it seems like we XyWin users are rather
rare.)

I tried, for testing purposes, to switch printers. What I was trying
to test was: the PS fonts which had always worked suddenly started:

- displaying with odd character sets (e.g. I would type what appeared in
draft mode as "[" "]" "," or "." and what appeared in
graphics mode
was always "_" ; or the whole font would display in symbol-font-like
gobbledygook or open squares) and

- not displaying the actual font in graphics mode (substituting
courier or dutch).

So I wondered if switching to using Adobe Acrobat as the printer
driver (which I've done many times before with no problem) would work,
since I could always print to PDF files and then print those.

When I went to "printer setup" via the menus and tried to load Adobe
Acrobat as the driver, XyWrite said "not enough memory to
perform requested function" (wording might be slightly off here), and
hung entirely (no key presses did anything) and hung Windows 2000,
except that Alt-CTrl-Deleted was able to bring up the task manager and
allow me to shut down XyWin (which took three tries).

Restarting XyWin brought it to the same hung state. So did restarting
Windows 2000 and then restarting XyWin.

So in fact your default is UWF 2 or Windows printing? I'm awfully rusty in
XyWin -- I've forgotten, if I ever knew, how to print PS when using Windows
printer system. Do those Windows PS fonts show up in XyWin's font selection
list?

"trying to switch printers ... on startup"??? You're switching printers for
"testing purposes" on startup, you mean in the XWSTART.INT file -- or what (and
why)? It hangs before launch completes? What does "hang" mean -- specific
error code in XyWin, a GPF in a XW DLL, a trap in NTVDM, what? Switching
physical printers, or switching printing _systems_ (XyWrite<==>Windows)?? What
test purpose is served by switching them?
