Re: Desktop publishing pioneer meeting 2017 (video)

Hi,
I saw the chat about lay out and design programs. I work with Scribus. It's free and works fine for me. See their website where the program can be downloaded.

Manuel,
I used to work with Quark 3.32 (Win 3.1, now I have it in W2K virtual machine), but I have switched to Xara Designer Pro X 11 for short documents like official document translations. It is in many ways similar to Affinity, and I know that many Xara users are switching to Affinity because of the recent change to a subscription model and some sluggishness of Xara development. Personally, I find my a-few-years-old Xara program a dream come true (it has it all in one program: bitmap and vector drawing, page design and web page design wrapped in a neat totally integrated package). Admittedly, Xara cannot do long documents like books, so I am looking elsewhere for that. Subscription models are not to my liking as I am used to keeping the same programs for decades.
I have just started to experiment with newer VP versions, and it seems
that the ANSI import/export filters are the way to go. The programs (VP
versions 7 and 10) are very responsive on both Win7 and VirtualBox W2K
platforms. I like my XyWrite formatting system quite a lot, and my
solution for bridging the gap to ANSI text in Ventura will probably
involve writing new conversion programs from DOS Xy3 format to VP ANSI
(with some new custom Windows character encodings to accommodate the
special characters I need).

Kari,
Similar route here: VP 3, VP 4.1, VP 5, VP 8, VP 10... I still have Ventura installed in my Mac computers using Parallels. Anyhow, when I switched to the Mac, I moved to Quark and now I am moving to Affinity Publisher (and waiting for footnotes/endnotes support, expected in version 2.0, like it happened with InDesign), because the current Quark commercial practices are a complete mistake. Regarding to VP more recent versions, it's possible to use VP 10 under Windows 7 (VP 8 in Win XP). Working with Ventura 8/10, I have used ansified XyWrite to create the external texts. I miss VP a lot.
Regards,
Manuel
