dragging files to Xy

Is there a simple way to "drag" a file from the Win95 desktop, or a
folder on the desktop to XyWrite?
Win95 allows me to do this if, and *only* if, the file is in the
subdirectory \Windows\desktop\ (or a further subdirectory)
What I would *like* to do is keep the files elsewhere and "point" to
them on the desktop. OS/2 does this with "shadow files", I think.
The overall purpose is this: Have a folder on my desktop called
"The Book". It would contain icons for XyWrite, my dictionaries,
LaTeX shell, bibliography program *and* icons (and helpful names)
for each of the chapters. I could do this by moving all my working
files, but that requires rewriting several batch files and changing
directory defaults.
Any suggestions?
