Try SA/RTF/NV. You can search the archives to read why

Hm. Reading the three posts and thinking about my files, I have
indeed "clipped" bits of text from .docs -- and perhaps .rft files.
As you wrote, that may be the "poison pill" in my case. And that
leads to a more complicated problem, at least in my setup, getting
TAME to behave when sa/rtf/nv is run. As is, when I do that, TAME
tosses all its settings.
There are a number of obvious work-arounds (disable TAME and run the
routine, use NB to convert to .rtf, or RH's DOS .rtf routine). Still
I'd like to figure out why TAME and sa/rtf/nv don't get along. I'm
still invoking XY/TAME from a .bat. Let me try starting from a
specialty AUTO[XY].NT file and see if the two are more compatible.
