RE: OED, CD-ROMS, Hard drives, etc.

I mumbled:

>> The OED can be cheaper than the price you quote

Digging out from under the blizzard of messages from "postmaster" [grrr!!],
I narrowly missed deleting a message by Robert Holmgren, in which he asks:

>Where, please (for the OED)?

The last I heard: Strand Book Store. On p. 3 of their Catalog H-9 (issued
latish 1996), item 52534 is the OED ver. 2 on CD-ROM for Windows, for $320.
(And item 52533 is the same for the Mac, for the same price.) Postage
within the US is very cheap. For me, they charged under $30 for airmail to
Japan.

Strand is a well-run company. I've bought books from them many times and
they have never slipped up and their packing has been good to excellent.
My copy of the OED turned out to have rather outdated software--all of
which is supplied on a single diskette, while the CD-ROM is wall to wall
dictionary. I got it just before I launched myself into cyberspace; as I
couldn't download newer software, OUP airmailed me a diskette free of charge.
