Parse with wild cards

Thanks to Tim B. and Carl for pointing out that the wildcards in XS have to
be upper case. I wouldn't object to that if the lowercase wildcards didn't
work at all, but the very misleading fact is that they do... except
sometimes! E.g., x will find any alphanumeric character but not a
separator.
