Footnote number size

Preface: Yes, I read the section in the manual.
How do you change the font and size of the footnote numbers as they appear
in the body of the document--i.e., as the antecedent symbol to which the
footnote content then refers?
It seems that ≪fm1sz=8pt≫ controls the number that appears with the
footnote (or in my case endnote) content. That's not what I'm after.
