3.55 has nothing to do with it.
The change to allow  to save the defined block began with v. 3.54. As
you may recall, the syntax for 3.53 and earlier was a bit more cumbersome.
So maybe John should check that he indeed does have 3.55 (accomplished of
course by entering HELP on the command line).
