wilcard errors

On my XyWin, the conversion between "lone return" to "return-line feed" is
easy, but I cannot do the vice versa (return-linefeed back to lone return).
The error message says "Wilcard must be in the same order on both sides of
a change".
Somebody can suggest me how to work around this problem to perform the job?

Many times, at the end of an e-mail message, people write "ciao  --a". I
understand "ciao" (I think...), but what means "  --a"?
