Good news about the xydos and xywin compatibility. I suspected as
much from looking at the keyboard file and its references to both
version but had no personal experiences to relate. I can help. I
think with one of your queries: (about getting more room on the
"status line):

If you are willing to sacrifice a little more vertical screen
real estate, go to the "view" menu, select "customize view" and
change the status line box from "on command line" to "top" or
"bottom". You'll get a full line for displaying prompts, etc.
