On the HP Laserjet 5L and other series 5 printers you should use a
cable that is IEE1284 compliant (bidirectional); if your parallel port
is designed for this sort of transaction, you can call up a small
program that comes on a disk with the HP that is a control panel of
sorts and acknowledges things like memory available, etc.
