I've been using EditPad Pro for years, and worked with Kari on the XyWrite/XPL syntax highlighting. EditPad is excellent for character conversion. Just select the encoding you want (among the 160+ available!) and the on-screen conversion is instantaneous. It's highly customizable -- I've barely begun to explore its depth of features.
