To Kari's remarks I would add that XPL in Xy4 is significantly more
powerful than in Xy3, as exemplified by the U2 customization file
(http://xywrite.org/xywwweb/). One result of this is that Xy4 --
especially Xy4 running in vDosPlus under Windows -- has the ability to
integrate tightly with Windows OS and apps. U2 uses many external
Windows programs (which we've dubbed "U2EXTRAS") to greatly extend the
power of Xy4-DOS running under Windows.
I think it depends on what you need to do. I have no doubt that Kari is
correct in terms of his experience, but for 30 years I did work for a
couple encyclopedias in Xy4 and SGML, and used a small corner of XPL to
make that possible. I didn't try to do what I was doing in Xy3+ because
I was no longer using it, but given my partial understanding of both, I
don't think I would have lasted long had I tried.
